Rishikesh - Gateway to Himalayas

Yoga capital of the world, gateway to the Himalayas, well known for white water rafting, named after Vishnu the lord of senses - Rishikesh is small town with a population of 75,000. The only activity recommended here is relaxing on the white silvery beaches carved out by the mighty and holy river Ganges. Rishikesh is located in the northern state of Uttarakhand and is amongst many spiritual centers in India that offers something to everyone. To a nature lover this place offers unparalleled solitude, long walks along the river Ganges, excitement of discovery of new places. To a adrenaline junky; thrills of white water rafting and a chance to navigate some of the most difficult rapids, bungee jumping, rappelling and long exhausting but very satisfying treks. To a photographer chance to add portraits of life time to their portfolio.

Most tourist coming to Rishikesh would only ever see the camps by the river side or in the middle of forest on the outskirts of the town of Rishikesh. I however recommend discovering the town itself; while you are at it try and stay away from the beaten tracks and you would discover beautiful small streams and waterfall that make for an ideal place for a picnic or just to read a book. Stop by for a spot of lunch at one of the many eateries run by the residents in and around Rishikesh to get a get taste of the local food. Days in Rishikesh are full of activities evening on the other hand are quite and blissful. Sit down on a quite beach to watch the play of light created by the sun setting behind the mountains, listening to the music created by the waves of mighty Ganges breaking the mountains to sand. Your night will fade away in to morning as your bon fire exhausts its fury. Watch the sun light up the horizon and listen to the music of the river all over again.

Bonus Tip:- If you are photographer you don't want to miss the aarti (prayer) that happens every evening at 6 O clock at Har ki Pauri in Haridawar, 20 K.M. away from Rishikesh

P.S. I broke my camera and lenses on day two of my trip to Rishikesh hence I don't have much to show by way of pictures, but take my word for it Rishikesh and beyond i.e. Badrinath, Hemkunth sahib are must do trips. www.facebook.com/see India
